Fabrication and integration of nanophotonic structures into next-generation light emitting devices
Job description
In the frame of the Joint Program on Optoelectronics and Nanophotonics between Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology, INL (UMR5270) – France and ams-OSRAM – Germany, a Research Engineer position is open for a duration of 24 months, The establishment of this position is supported by the Important Project of Common European Interest on microelectronics and communication technologies (IPCEI ME/CT) - OptoSuRe (16IPCEI221).
This Joint Program aims at developing novel and fully functional miniaturized Light Emitting Diodes assisted by nanophotonic structures, including photonic crystals, metasurfaces or other related structures. With such integration, key properties like the radiation pattern or the polarization state will be controlled, while maintaining high electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency and limiting the technological cost. The open Engineer position will be focused on the fabrication of the nanophotonic structures integrated in the targeted devices. The Engineer will collaborate with the INL i-Lum team permanent researchers involved in the project, the INL-OSRAM Chair holder, a PhD student, a post-doc fellow and the Nanolyon platform staff.
The Engineer will develop processes for producing nanophotonic structures in semiconductor materials. The methods used will include electron beam lithography, nanoimprint lithography, plasma etching (RIE and ICP-RIE) and thin film deposition (PECVD, ALD, sputtering). The structures and films produced will be characterised using SEM, AFM and ellipsometry measurements. The Engineer will interact closely with the other team members involved in this project, both in terms of simulation and design and optical characterisation. He/she will actively participate in international progress meetings and any other meetings required for the project to run smoothly.
The main place of work will be the INL and its Nanolyon technology platform - both on the Ecully site, Centrale Lyon campus, and on the Lyontech La Doua campus, all located in the Lyon metropolitan area. Recruitment will be subject to the approval of the security/defence officer and, for foreign candidates, to the issue of a work visa.

Job requirements
We are looking for candidates with a Master's degree (M2) or an Engineering degree, specialising in semiconductor materials and devices and cleanroom technologies. Excellent communication skills in English will complement your profile. As this project is at the interface of chemistry, materials and micro/nano manufacturing processes, the ideal candidate is expected to be highly motivated to drive this multidisciplinary project with own ideas and generate knowledge in a self-reliant way of working.
