Tailoring the light emission properties in miniaturized LEDs by advanced nanophotonics

Job description

The PhD position is funded by the Joint Program on Optoelectronics and Nanophotonics between Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology, INL (UMR5270) – France and ams-OSRAM – Germany, with the support of the Important Project of Common European Interest on microelectronics and communication technologies (IPCEI ME/CT) - OptoSuRe (16IPCEI221).

The thesis aims at the development and the integration of photonic nanostructures for the realization of highly efficient miniaturized LEDs which enable future applications in visualization. By engineering the light–matter interactions at the nanoscale, this project seeks to tune the radiation characteristics of novel light-emitter concepts toward higher brightness, strong directionality, and enhanced efficiency [1,2]. During the project also more advanced concepts that may involve control of the polarization state of light or the use of emerging materials shall be evaluated in order to realize novel functionalities and pave the way toward new applications.

The Research work shall focus on design, fabrication, and characterization of photonic structures and their subsequent integration into recent optoelectronic devices. Electromagnetic simulations will complement the experimental work and support the design definition. The PhD student will have access to the Nanolyon state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization facilities. The relevant processing tool park comprises among others electron-beam, laser, and nano-imprint lithography, RIE and ICP-RIE etching, e-beam assisted and sputter deposition, ALD and others. Necessary characterization setups will include electro- and photoluminescence spectroscopy, Fourier-space spectroscopy, and near-field characterization from the VIS to the NIR range.

Offer Starting Date: October 1st, 2025

Job requirements

Master in physics, nanophotonics and/or optoelectronics, or any relevant fields.  An initial training in nanofabrication and characterization of photonic and optoelectronic devices would be a benefit.
